Top 7 Most Common Hair Care Mistakes

Hair Mistakes Women go through a lot of effort to make sure that their locks are well taken care of.  Sometimes though, your hair care habits may be the cause of damage!  To make sure that your hair care regimen is not the culprit, read below the top 5 common hair mistakes you want to avoid.

Not Using the Right Shampoo

Common Hair Mistakes Not Using Right Shampoo Hair products like shampoo aren’t a one-size-fits-all kind of thing nowadays.  There are products targeted to fine, curly, oily, dandruff prone or color-treated hair.  Usually, shampoos for oily hair will be too harsh and drying for those with normal hair.  Conversely, products intended for dry and brittle hair will be too heavy for those with fine hair.

If you have color treated hair or have undergone a chemical treatment, make sure you choose a sulphate-free shampoo.  This will help prolong your color and restore your hair’s health naturally.

To avoid these common hair mistakes, be sure to read the label and get a product that is suited to your hair type.

Skipping Weekly Deep Conditioning Treatments

Ideally, you should use conditioner every time you shampoo. This helps restore the moisture that may have been lost because of shampooing, and helps prevent frizz and dryness.  A deep conditioning treatment is also called for once a week to repair hair cuticles which may have been damaged over a week’s worth of styling, pressure and heat.

Rubbing Your Hair Dry with a Towel

Hair Care Mistakes Rubbing Hair Dry Towel One of the most common hair care mistakes is rubbing hair roughly with a towel.  Rubbing your hair while it’s wet will rough up hair cuticles and cause breakage and frizz.

Instead, spray on a hair detangler and dry your hair by squeezing excess water with your hands or an absorbent towel.  You can proceed to wrapping your hair in a towel for 5 to 10 minutes.

Brushing Wet Hair

Wet hair is more prone to tangling and breakage, but that doesn’t mean you let it dry without detangling and getting rid of knots!  Use an extra wide tooth comb on wet hair.  Avoid narrowly spaced combs which can snag and break wet hair.  Brushes are a complete no-no when working on wet hair.  Be patient when detangling and start from the bottom so you won’t risk snagging on knots when working from the top.

Heat Styling Without Protection

Excessive heat styling strips your hair of moisture and softness, causing it to look brittle and dry.  Make sure you apply a heat protective serum or spray before using a blow dry, curling iron or straightener.

Hair Care Mistakes Prolonging Haircut Trim Prolonging a Trim

Schedule an appointment with your stylist every 6 to 8 weeks depending on your hair growth for a regular trim.  This helps get rid of split ends, which may travel up to the roots if a trim is delayed.

Applying Styling Products to the Scalp

Sprays, serums, gels and mousses are designed to work on your hair strands.  Try to limit their use midway and on the tips of your hair.  You want to avoid product buildup on the scalp which may cause greasiness, irritation or even breakage.
