The oil cleansing method has received a lot of attention by women of all ages and skin types lately. But how does it really work? Is it the right method for you? Below is our quick guide to understanding how the oil cleansing method works, what oils to use for your skin type and in what proportions, and how to properly do it in order to pave your way to clearer and more radiant skin!
What is the Oil Cleansing Method?
The oil cleansing method is a way of cleaning your face by using essential oils like sunflower oil, jojoba, or almond oil. The oil is softly massaged onto your skin, and then wiped away with a warm washcloth. This leaves skin clean and moisturized at the same time!
How Does it Work?
To understand how the oil cleansing method works, let’s look into how regular facial cleansers perform. Majority of the cleansers sold in the market today are oil-free and oil-fighting, and it in effect strips your skin of its natural oils. As a result, you get a squeaky clean face, much like a plate scrubbed free of grease. Sounds good? No. When your skin is stripped of its natural oils, it goes into overdrive and overcompensates for the loss of oil. Immediately after washing, your skin may feel taut and dry, but after a while, you are left with an oil slick.
This is where the oil cleansing method comes in. The oil cleansing method is based on the scientific principle, “Like dissolves like.” In order to get rid of excess sebum and dirt on the skin, oil is needed to gently wipe away the dirty oil, allowing it to be replaced with cleaner oil. This way, your skin maintains its natural ‘oiliness’ and does not need to go overdrive to replace the lost oils.
Benefits of Oil Cleansing Method
Many advocates of the oil cleansing method are reporting clearer skin that’s free of acne, blackheads and whiteheads. It is also effective in combating dryness, and can be used as a single step to replace cleansing and moisturizing altogether. It is also very natural and safe to use. As an added bonus, it removes makeup easily, even waterproof and long-staying ones!
What Oils Should I Use?
The key to making the oil cleansing method work is finding the perfect ratio or combination of oils suited to your skin type. If you have oily skin, use sweet almond or grapeseed oil as your carrier oil. For dry and aging skin, use avocado, apricot kernel or argan oil. For acne prone skin, jojoba is highly recommended. Castor oil is a staple as it has excellent cleansing and antibacterial properties.
Simply prepare a mix of castor oil and your carrier oil of choice in 2/3 and 1/3 ratio or half and half. Adjust accordingly if you find the castor oil too drying.
Avoid using olive oil or coconut oil. Olive oil does not work for some reason, while coconut oil is believed to be a comedogenic which clogs pores and causes blackheads. Remember to use extra virgin or cold-pressed oils, and wash your washcloths regularly!
Now that you’ve learned how the oil cleansing method works, it’s up to you to decide whether to give it a try!
