Color is such a compelling aspect of decorating that it has the power to create a believable illusion. The right color or color combination can make even the smallest space seem large, airy, and inviting. Check out these color combinations that can and will make your room look larger!
1. White with accents
White rooms always look the largest. White is an ideal backdrop because it’s so versatile. It goes with everything and nothing clashes with it. It also stands up to darker, dramatic furniture colors. You may not love the idea of an entirely white room, and that’s perfectly fine because white lends itself well to bolder accents.
With white, you can paint an accent wall without making the other walls close in around you — even if the space is tiny. Create black and white stripes, contrast coral or turquoise, or paint an entire wall a deep shade of red, cobalt blue, or emerald-green. As long as the other three walls are white, your room will look wide open.
2. Citrus tones
Yellow is a wonderful color in tiny rooms; however, don’t go too dark or too bright. A subtle shade of lemon, soft banana, or a pale, creamy yellow work best. It’s better with darker contrasts too, especially if you have a narrow room. Consider the way vertical stripes slim down a rotund figure. Stripes will make a narrow room look much larger. With yellow, select a citrus theme by incorporating a sorbet orange or light lime green.
3. Sea shades
Do you prefer a neutral room that still incorporates color? Lighter blues and greens create a soothing atmosphere that simultaneously enlarges and brightens your space. Sea foam green especially ideal because it works well with so many other shades, such as pink, blue, white, or yellow. You can also use a darker trim in the same spectrum, using a vibrant emerald, a rich forest green, or a vivid glass-bottle green.
Blue is just as versatile, especially with white or light carpets. Use white trim in your blue room to create a sweet, vintage look that automatically expands the space. Keep your window treatments white for more spaciousness.
4. Pretty pastels
More feminine, pastel hues brighten any space while making it look bigger. Light pink, mauve, peach, and lilac or lavender are especially lovely choices. These cutesy colors might be too much on their own. Keep things interesting by going with tan, beige, or cream trim. Paint the door and window frames in light, subtle neutrals. Add accents with darker shades on the same spectrum. Use throw pillows, rugs, and window treatments to tie it all together.
