Breastfeeding in public has become quit the trending topic these days! We are in full support of this activity, so Go Mom’s! We were women who breastfed our babies as well and of course there had been times we had to do so in public. When I was on baby number two and he needed to eat; well we found a comfortable spot to sit and I let baby feed! What else are we to do? As it was my second child in a row breastfeeding I was much more comfortable with this job and more skilled at getting it done. I personally never felt uncomfortable doing so in public, the baby needed to eat and I needed to feed him so we did what we had to do. Though I did try my best to get a blanket over baby and breast to give us our privacy and keep my body to me and baby. I always kept covered as best I could. The only time it was difficult to keep covered would be when baby was just getting latched on or just finishing up. Coming on and off and getting situated well; sometimes it was hard to keep the blanket over us through all of our adjusting. Which is understandable, right? I think the surrounding people in our public location would rather have a quiet baby feeding than a baby screaming in hunger.
People who complain about mothers feeding their babies in public probably have never breastfed a baby. If they have then they would understand the importance of what those mothers are doing for their babies. First of all, the baby is hungry and it needs its mother’s breast to eat! Who can logically argue with that?! Some might say to pump a bottle while you go out in public. For some that may be possible and good for them, but for others like myself, my two youngest sons were exclusively breast fed and refused to eat anything from a bottle. Even if the child would take a bottle the mother is not required to pump a bottle just because other people might not like her breast feeding her child. We understand the hassle and difficulty to pump extra bottles ahead of time. If you are on a schedule and only produce enough milk for each feeding then it still may be very difficult to pump a bottle ahead of time even if baby would take it! Not to mention trying to plan on when to pump before leaving, keeping milk warm or having to warm it up. What a hassle! If you’re a breastfeeding mom its much easy just to whip it out and feed when baby demands to be fed!
For the mothers who whip out the entire breast and let baby just feed right there all in plain sight… well that can be a little uncomfortable for the onlookers passing by. Never would I ever say it was gross, or inappropriate. But I would say make a little effort to maybe cover up? I don’t think I would want my nine year old son to see breasts out at the mall. He understands breastfeeding as I was always doing it with his little brothers, but I still wouldn’t appreciate him seeing breasts even if feeding a small child. Boobs are still boobs even if they are being used for feeding and if it’s possible then I would hope mommies would try to keep them to themselves. Regardless, we understand and are in full support! Feed your babies when and where you need to and do so in comfort for you and baby.
With Love,
