What is The Alkaline Diet?

To aid the body in maintaining the slightly alkaline pH level, the Alkaline Diet works by increasing the intake of alkaline foods and cutting out acidic foods.

What are Alkaline Foods?

alkaline cucumber salad sesame seeds The Alkaline Diet is mainly composed of dark green leafy vegetables (usually raw or lightly steamed), sprouts, nuts, lentils, tubers, squash, beans, and essential oils, amongst others.  Fruit is a touchy subject because of the amount of sugar involved, so only seasonal fruits are recommended and in moderation.  Lemons, avocados, tomatoes and grapefruit, on the other hand, are highly alkalizing and often used in alkaline recipes.  The use of spices like rosemary and coriander, and wheat alternatives like buckwheat, cous cous, brown rice and quinoa are also common.

What are Alkaline Drinks?

Alkaline Drinks are simple and straightforward – straight alkaline water, or water infused with alkaline fruits and vegetables like lemon and cucumber.  Making vegetable juices and smoothies are an essential part of the diet.  Herbal teas such as Yerba Mate Tea, Rooibos Tea, and Ginger Tea are incorporated into the diet as alternatives to its more acidic counterpart, coffee.

What Not to Eat and Drink

If it has been processed, don’t eat it.  If it has sugar in it, don’t even think about it.  If it has caffeine or alcohol, cut it out of your diet.  Trans fat, yeast or artificial sweeteners are also considered highly acidic.

Some advocates of the alkaline diet skip out on animal dairy products.  As an alternative, coconut, almond and soy milk are preferred.  Animal meat is highly acidic and should as much as possible, be removed out of your diet.

What Does a Typical Alkaline Meal Look Like
