Makeup for Beginners: Building a Basic Beauty Kit (Drugstore)

Makeup Beginner Ready to get into the world of makeup but don’t know where to start? You’re not alone. There are a lot of makeup varieties out there and it’s easy to get lost with all the overwhelming options. Sometimes, not knowing where to start can put you off your goal altogether. Good thing is – we’ve rounded up our drugstore recommendations to help beginners build a personal basic beauty kit!

Skin Care

Makeup goes on so much better when you have a great base – your skin! Try to stay hydrated, eat fruits and vegetables, and start a skin care routine. Stick to the basics where you cleanse, tone and moisturize. Before anything else, know your skin type (dry, normal, oily, combination) and try to get products suited to your skin.

brushes Tools

Your makeup is only as good as your tools. Try to invest in a starter brush set that comes with a good mix of face and eye brushes. The Eco Tools 6 Piece Starter Set is a good option, as well as Real Techniques Travel Essentials kit.

Foundation & Concealer

If you have good enough skin and just want to look refreshed, concealing your dark circles is the way to go. We recommend the Maybelline Fit Me Concealer in a shade slightly lighter than your skin tone.

If you need extra coverage, invest in foundation. Your choice of powder, cream or liquid foundation will depend on your skin type. If you are using cream or liquid foundation (best for dry or normal skin), you may have to get a finishing powder to set your makeup, like Rimmel Stay Matte Powder. If you’re worried about matching your skin tone to your foundation, L’oreal True Match Super Blendable Makeup has a wide array of shades for cool, neutral and warm undertones.

Eye Products

eye makeup As makeup for beginner, be sure to at least get the basics – an eyebrow product, black or brown eyeliner pencil, and mascara. If you’re ready to experiment, choose a trio of neutral eyeshadow colors like Wet n Wild Color Icon Palette in Walking on Eggshells. It has a guide on where to place the colors, too! Once you’re comfortable using pencil eyeliner, try liquid eyeliner next.

Cheeks

Blush brings back warmth to your face and adds a nice pop of color. To start, choose a neutral mid-tone pink or mauve blush to give your face a nice flush. NYX Powder Blush in Dusty Rose is a great blush for everyday wear and suits most light to medium complexions.

Lips

lipstick Lipsticks come in many finishes – matte, satin, frost, and sheer. It’s a matter of preference, but if you’re not used to seeing color on your lips, transition by using sheer lipsticks, lip gloss, or tinted lip balm. Revlon’s Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain is a good place to start. Don’t forget to invest in lip balm to keep your lips moisturized.

And that’s it! In makeup for beginner, you don’t need to worry yourself about intense highlighting and contouring, color correcting or false lashes at this point. For now, get to know your face shape and start to feel comfortable about adding color to your face. It takes getting used to, but you’ll love the boost of confidence it gives you once you’re into it!
